October 29, 2012 (茄子视频):  茄子视频 City Unified School District officials are urging parents to follow common sense safety guidelines this Halloween (Wednesday, October 31) to ensure a fun, worry-free holiday for students and families.

School planning block party to celebrate new namesake
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd to attend ceremony that will honor his mother

October 17, 2012 (茄子视频):  A block party will be held on Saturday to celebrate Leataata 鈥淭ata鈥 Floyd, a Seavey Circle neighborhood advocate whose work with young people inspired an SCUSD school to change its name in her honor.

Jedediah Smith Elementary elected to change its name to Leataata Floyd Elementary earlier this year, a change approved by the Board of Education. Mrs. Floyd is a longtime advocate for the Seavey Circle community in which she lives and teaches Polynesian dancing at the school.

SCUSD student to be surprised with $10,000 scholarship today
West Campus High School student wins Nordstrom award over 900 other applicants

October 15, 2012 (茄子视频):  West Campus High School senior Christina Fang will be surprised today with a $10,000 scholarship from Nordstrom.

Fang is one of only 80 winners across the country. To qualify, students must demonstrate community involvement, financial need and strong academics. Applicants also must submit a personal statement and answer an essay question. Fang was also interviewed by the Nordstrom scholarship committee in San Francisco.

California Department of Education data released today validates district initiatives to increase student achievement

October 11, 2012 (茄子视频): State test data released today validates 茄子视频 City Unified School District鈥檚 aggressive efforts to transform low-performing schools and implement rigorous student achievement standards in every classroom.

For the second year, students in SCUSD鈥檚 Superintendent鈥檚 Priority Schools made almost across-the-board gains on state tests. In addition, SCUSD鈥檚 middle school students 鈥 adolescents often regarded as the hardest to teach 鈥 also made impressive strides, outpacing their elementary and high school peers in gains.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month; session tonight is second in a series to combat destructive behaviors

October 10, 2012 (茄子视频):  茄子视频 City Unified School District will hold a community bullying prevention training at Sutter Middle School tonight 鈥 October 10 鈥 which is also Unity Day, a national event to promote tolerance.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

OfficeMax to honor Golden Empire teacher on 鈥楢 Day Made Better鈥; students to be surprised, too

WHAT:                                 Golden Empire Elementary School teacher Renee Mondzak will receive a surprise visit from OfficeMax to award her $1,000 worth of classroom supplies as part of the annual A Day Made Better advocacy program.

September 20, 2012 (茄子视频): Schools in 茄子视频 City Unified School District are participating in the first-ever Green Apple Day of Service, an international event sponsored by the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council.

The first Green Apple Day project gets underway this Saturday (September 22) at West Campus High School. Hundreds of volunteers from Starbucks, Rebuilding Together, State of Being and the West Campus community will work to revitalize the grounds surrounding two classroom wings.

Program is part of district-wide push to keep students safe

September 17, 2012 (茄子视频):  茄子视频 City Unified School District will hold the first of four community bullying prevention trainings at Luther Burbank High School tomorrow night (Tuesday, September 18).

The trainings are free and open to anyone in the community who wants to learn more about bullying.

鈥淲e鈥檙e working hard to raise awareness of bullying so our students can better advocate for themselves when bullying occurs,鈥 said SCUSD Bullying Prevention Specialist Sheila Self.

Assemblymember Roger Dickinson to Distribute Over 300

On Wednesday, September 12, Assemblymember Roger Dickinson will distribute over 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to 茄子视频 youth. Dickinson鈥檚 2nd annual 鈥淕ive Back(pack) Drive,鈥 a back-to-school drive to collect backpacks and supplies for kindergarten through 6th grade students in 茄子视频 ran throughout the month of August.

With school starting Tuesday, SCUSD reminds parents of bus service cuts
Letters, automated phone calls sent home; bus service still available to some students

August 31, 2012 (茄子视频):  School starts on Tuesday, and the 茄子视频 City Unified School District is working hard to remind parents that bus service for elementary school students has been eliminated with a few exceptions.

To balance a $28 million budget deficit, the SCUSD鈥檚 Board of Education voted last spring to eliminate all home-to-school transportation for elementary school students.

May 30, 2012 (茄子视频):  Despite deep state funding cuts that have forced the near elimination of traditional summer school, 茄子视频 City Unified School District is expanding its innovative 鈥淪ummer of Service鈥 program for teens.

鈥淪ummer of Service鈥 combines community service and project-based learning with a traditional 鈥渂ridge鈥 program aimed at easing the sometimes scary transition to middle and high school. Last year, about 800 SCUSD kids participated in the program.
