Students, Firefighters to ‘Retire’ Old Glory at Flag Day Assembly
The tattered and faded American flag that has flown over Leonardo da Vinci K-8 School for years will be “retired” on Flag Day (Tuesday, June 14) in a ceremony featuring firefighters, local scouting troops and patriotic music.
The Flag Day Assembly, which will include a ceremonial burning of the flag, will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, at Leonardo da Vinci K-8 School, 4701 Joaquin Way. Students, firefighters from Ƶ Fire Station #12 and local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will assist in the proceedings. Ashes from the flag will be scattered over the school’s garden.
Additionally, members of the Sons of the American Revolution – dressed in Revolutionary War-era uniforms – will serve as color guard.
“This is an important assembly for our children because it provides them with a rare opportunity to observe the proper way to retire a flag that has become too old to fly,” said assembly coordinator Carol Toyama, who is da Vinci’s office manager.
